I built a computer

Posted by life Jul. 27, 2008 @ 6:47 AM EDT

I've spent the last few weeks ordering parts to build a computer and after two days of headaches it's fully working and awesome!

Here's my parts list:

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
RAM - Corsair 4GB (2GBx2)
Video Card - GeForce 8800GS
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Optical Drive - Samsung 20X
Power Supply - Antec NeoPower 650 Blue 650W ATX12V / EPS12V
Case - Antec 900

It wasn't all that hard. If you are interested in saving a ton of money on a swell computer then consider building your own. It's a good experience. You can PM for help if you need some.

Here's one other (shitty) picture.

id rather buy a full one into knowing what I get in the system and what system type I get

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:00 AM life responds:

Err? You get a much better knowledge of that if you build it yourself.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:00 AM jackedy says:

you built a computer?your own computer?
good for you i guess

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:01 AM life responds:

Why, thank you!

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:57 AM Evilbobol says:

nice one! I built my own computer too, it's not as hard as some people think... most of the plugs and sockets are fairly obvious too.

I could do with a case like that, got a crappy £30 Xblade that I should replace.
Hmmm, same graphics card, only 2GB RAM though. Looks like upgrade tiem for me soon... only got 80GB left on my 250GB Hard drive...

Anyway, enough ranting from me.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:17 AM life responds:

Awesome.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:24 AM sirtom93 says:

Awesome, I have always considered building one but I need to it after I get the correct funds.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:54 AM life responds:

Yes.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:25 AM AlienMuffin says:

seems like it would be awesome for gaming purposes

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:53 AM life responds:

Indeed.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:33 AM skarai says:

Not bad. I built a very similar one, but with better parts.
You liked the VHOOOOSH sound in the beginning?
Gratz on the build man, great parts.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:54 AM life responds:

Vhoosh is awesome. What parts did you use?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:34 AM narutosaifu says:

Dude you got the same case as me! its freaking chunky isn't it?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:08 PM life responds:

It's the perfect size.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:35 AM skarai says:

Same case, 8800 GTS, Western digital too, but with 465 gig. (500)
Intel quad core, Gigabyte GA-X38 and same memory. Corsair 620.
Got a Xonar D2 too though. So thats the only difference really.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:10 PM life responds:

Not too much better. I think my 2 duo is better for me. I don't do anything that requires a quad processor.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:48 AM Lambinvoker says:

I built my own computer three years ago. Sadly, today my new laptop (which I am currently using) runs faster than it, and the laptop cost half the price. How much did you have to shell out for that mug?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:11 PM life responds:

$650

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:54 AM Iamjohn says:

How much was the total cost?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:11 PM life responds:

$600-650 with the mail in rebates. I used some coupons and special deals though, so all around $500 for me.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 10:39 AM Smashedsmurf says:

How's the 8800 GT?

And I've seen WAY too many people using the same case.

But I'm just jealous I don't have the money to build my own yet. =C

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:12 PM life responds:

That's because this case = (_)_)IIIIIIIIIIIIID~

Jul. 27, 2008 | 12:21 PM snake23 says:

Nice setup, it is much cheaper to buy the parts seperately onlinde and put it together. Pc stores who sell full pc's charge too much for assembly and putting in windows, I've felt screwed over by those stores too many times >:(

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:12 PM life responds:

www.newegg.com Huge deals, great service.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 12:56 PM Rammer says:

hey, i have the same video card as you! :D

also, nice job. i want to build a computer someday, too. i just need money. and time.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:13 PM life responds:

Cool.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 1:07 PM Wurmy says:

liquid cooling ftw..

Jul. 27, 2008 | 2:13 PM life responds:

I don't need it. The Intel chip runs cool enough with the shitty included heat sink.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 3:05 PM Pedrovski says:

Really nice
it's cheaper to buy the parts and assemble it yourself...
not that hard either
I wish i'd just had the money

Btw: it looks awesome!!
xD

Jul. 27, 2008 | 4:00 PM life responds:

Thank you!

Jul. 27, 2008 | 3:21 PM Reaperyami says:

Wow, what was the total sum? I might build my own computer when I get a place of my own.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 4:00 PM life responds:

Scroll up.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 3:56 PM Harveywuk says:

Nice choice of components =] and gratz on your first? build!

Jul. 27, 2008 | 4:00 PM life responds:

Yes.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 5:14 PM fullmetal-ozelot says:

dood, recently i just bought myself a nearly complete new system. First i just bought a gf8800gt but since the graphiccard did not work with my computer (the card itself works I tried it on my friends computer) i bought additionally a asus motherboard and a intelcore2quad6600 ... it was really hard for me to decide wether to get a dual or quadcore but my friend convinced me to get a quadcore...

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:02 PM life responds:

Quad core is pointless unless you're doing like video editing with four high end programs open. Duel core is more efficient for most. Quad core will be in the future, though.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 6:23 PM mooguy says:

Wow that's nicer than an Alienware. And at half the cost? Congrats. Which part cost the most?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:01 PM life responds:

The cpu.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 7:49 PM inuyashaslayers says:

i didnt build it but my computer is allthe way shitty i have 1 gb left no virtul memery (how do i get more memeory for ) and well i guess i can see why its slow because i had my desktop for lik 4 years (i nkow i nkow i need to buy a new but ya how do i get more memory also life be a computer techinecion they make good money my sister make 26 dollars a hour

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:09 PM life responds:

That would be a good side job. You can get more memory, just buy a stick or two of RAM. What motherboard do you have?

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:23 PM luka says:

650 dollars? Damn, life in USA is cheap :S I shelled out twice as much for a similar but less powerful computer here in friggin Europe.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 8:34 PM life responds:

Did you build it yourself? Here prebuilt machines cost significantly more also.

Jul. 27, 2008 | 9:16 PM DimensionSpectre says:

Man, you know what's good. I can't understand people who aren't willing to try to understand these magic boxes they use every day. For those of us who do though, guess we get the upper hand in deals and stuff. My computer's fairly decent, cost 500 bucks, not nearly as good as yours, and completely different (prefer AMD) but the point remains. It saves tons of money. I used to work at a computer store and for a system of my caliber, they would have asked ~1100 probably. Probably would've touted the 2x7600GT in SLi too, but honestly, it was just cheaper.
Anyway man, good job sounds like a good rig and for a fairly unbeatable price. Nice going!

Jul. 27, 2008 | 11:57 PM life responds:

Thanks!

Jul. 28, 2008 | 12:19 AM Plasmodius says:

That's pretty neat, I just wish the pictures were of better quality.

Also, I'm surprised that the case for that thing was so expensive.

Jul. 28, 2008 | 12:45 AM life responds:

It's quality.

Jul. 28, 2008 | 3:24 AM Dungeonbrownies says:

I'm surprised you didnt try to cram tons more processors in. some ppl trying to double up on quadcores, super overkill. But looking wt what youve provided, you've still got quite the machine. IM jeaouls. =/

Jul. 28, 2008 | 4:15 AM life responds:

There's no point in that at the moment. It's just overkill and wasted money.

Jul. 28, 2008 | 4:42 AM RobotTaco says:

You are the Mod I admire the most. I want to be a User just like you.

Jul. 28, 2008 | 11:45 AM life responds:

Jul. 28, 2008 | 5:40 AM sirbobsalot2 says:

Aug. 6, 2008 | 1:39 PM Di3X0m3ga says:

Very nice job. Where did you buy the parts?

Aug. 6, 2008 | 6:11 PM life responds:

Newegg. I gave links.

Aug. 6, 2008 | 9:26 PM X-TERRORIST-X says:

Wow, that's awsome!

My friends build their own shit, I envy them :(

Do you have any suggestions on how to start learning to build a computer? I have close to zero knowledge but I really want to learn how to. However, I get intimidated looking at posts such as this because it's so much information to take in at once.

Aug. 6, 2008 | 11:46 PM life responds:

It's really easy. I just followed an online guide and the manuals. The motherboard manual explains everything really easy. It's no harder than legos.

Aug. 7, 2008 | 2:12 AM speeling says:

Aug. 11, 2008 | 1:55 PM DJ-Divinorum says:

Since you blocked me:

Really? Guess what drugs are... stimulants

They stimulate feelings that can be felt without using them. Hence artificial happiness, anyone can feel that feeling on their own. It's possible if you know how to achieve the feeling, music basically how artists portray their feelings and emotions.

Understand now?

Aug. 11, 2008 | 1:58 PM life responds:

You can't feel salvia with out doing it, you fucking idiot. It isn't a stimulant.

Aug. 11, 2008 | 5:39 PM Evark says:

Happy with your results? Are you running Linux on that beast or Windows? I haven't had the funds to finance my own home built computer yet, but I've been meaning to build my next desktop for years now.

Aug. 11, 2008 | 6:38 PM life responds:

Yeah ,man. It feels great to have a computer that can actually watch flash and play games again. I'm running windows XP, but I just got my ubuntu disk in the mail, so I'm going to look into dual booting it.

Right now is a great time to start ordering parts. There's rebates and deals everywhere.

Aug. 14, 2008 | 5:50 PM Goonie says:

So i finally saved up about 900 dollars. Im looking to buy parts for a new computer.

Aug. 14, 2008 | 9:56 PM life responds:

Have any ideas yet?

Aug. 16, 2008 | 4:49 PM Resolution says:

In a couple of weeks I'm going to be buying parts a new built, well actually it's my first build :]
I'm getting the computer pretty much half price by building my own, and I guess as long as you know what you're doing it's well worth it... so here are teh specs:

Motherboard - MSI P35 Neo2-FR iP35
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM - Corsair 4GB (2GBx2)
Video Card - Radeon HD 4850 (minorly better than a 9800GTX)
Hard Drive - Samsung Spinpoint 1TB 32mb cache
Power Supply - Hiper 550W
Case - Antec 300

Aug. 16, 2008 | 11:24 PM life responds:

Why do you need a quad core? Also, I would bump up the PSU to 600.

Aug. 17, 2008 | 9:25 AM deckheadtottie says:

Pretty tasty shit there, yo.

I buy my computers from Aldi and add bits on to them as they get older. To date, I don't think I've actually built a PC from scratch.

Shame on me.

Aug. 17, 2008 | 12:50 PM life responds:

Well, you are saving money.

Aug. 17, 2008 | 9:30 AM RohantheBarbarian says:

Awesome man! 15000 blams and 15000 saves at the same time! I'd take a screenshot if I was you.

Aug. 17, 2008 | 12:50 PM life responds:

It's been like that for a year and will always be like that.

Aug. 21, 2008 | 7:53 PM Griffonzo67 says:

Aug. 24, 2008 | 12:39 PM PolishMatt says:

It's barely overkill, if not just a bit above standard.
The processor is three years old almost; it's like the first kind of dual cores that ever came out
The graphics card is amazing but it was only 200$, there are cards costing upwards of 1200$ out there.
I only recently added 2GB of RAM because of intensive games and programs such as FlashCS3 and PSCS2
The motherboard is very old as well, nothing special about it, it doesn't even have more than 1 PCI Express port.
I only had a 250GB HD this whole time till space was getting extremely limited last month.
The power supply is pretty weak considering I need at least a 450Watt PS to run the graphics card
I pirated my copy of Windows even though I have a legit copy of XP but it's 32bit and I want to get every bit of power out of this thing so I got a 64x OS.
The case was cheap as well and doesn't look as nice as yours,
And a 20" screen... computers these days come with 20~24" so I don't see what's so great about it.
Just hardware I actually need and put to good use.

I see you did your buying at newegg, wise choice my good man.Very.
